What did you guys think? Isn't that the craziest thing you have ever seen?? I couldn't even believe that I had buttons sewed into my stomach after I woke up and didn't even know why. I had to call the Dr.'s office!
That was crazy-weird. I guess the buttons made it easier to see the stitch and pull out.
OK so my husband is a veterinarian and he says they use buttons sometimes. They'll use it when they have removed a large amount of skin and have to stretch the skin really far to suture (stitch) it back up. That causes a lot of tension and can rip the suture through the skin but when they use buttons it puts the pressure on the button and not the skin and it doesn't tear. His guess for your surgery is that it's similar because of the tension. Likely the buttons were there to prevent the suture from going through the skin and keep the ovaries out of the way. Does that make sense?

That was awesome to watch. It didn't gross me out because my son has had so many surgeries and I have removed stitches myself like that, but the button holding it in place was very intriguing. I hope you're healing up nicely.

That was very interesting. I haven't heard of anything like this. Be sure to save the buttons and make a special card to put them on for the memories. This did not gross me out at all. I do find it interesting that your husband is the one to remove them and not your Dr. Thanks for letting me see this as I would probably never have heard of it otherwise.
Yeah I was surprised they told me to just pull it out too.. but it wasn't hard and no point in paying more for a doctor to do it, if we easily could, right? 😉
This reminds me of my knee surgery when i was 16. I had a Patella stabilization, aka Fulkerson 'procedure'. I had him video tape it and get pictures while doing the scope to see the damage before he opened me up. You're right – highly fascinating. I hope you're healing continues!

That is so gross! I had open heart surgery almost two years ago and they had stitched two 1 inch by 18 inch rubber drain tubes into my stomach and had lead wires attached to my heart coming out of my chest. When they were sure my heart was working properly, they took out the lead wires. A couple days later they yanked the tubing out. It was the most painful and odd feeling I have ever had. The worst part was that he was supposed to get it all out in one pull but they didn't come out all the way the first yank, so he had to pull again. It was awful! The things they do to us during and after surgery! Hope you're feeling better!
AHHHH! That is way worse than this. You poor thing. That sounds just awful!

WTH to me buttons scream malpractice, has anyone ever heard of that before? Would love to know if this is actually normal for the procedure you had!!
Veterinarians use buttons to prevent suture from ripping through the skin when it's stretched. Most likely, the buttons were there to stabilize the the suture so it didn't pull through her skin from the weight of the ovaries. (My husband is a vet and that was his guess)
+haert2run ah okay, welll i sorta figured they were for a reason but it just seems odd that they chose buttons (that arent even the same color) if they were both the same color i could understand them as being a sterile instrument used for surgical proceedures but since they look more like buttons Grandma would have hidden in a can I was confused. I guess I just expect something like this to LOOK more like a medical device/instrument because if I woke up with buttons on me I would be like WHAT!!? I def understand the purpose they were serving but really would love to know if they are actually approved for use in a surgical procedure on humans? I hope that makes sense.
On a side note, my vet said that sunscreens were often poisonous to dogs esp if they have zinc, my doxie keeps getting sunburnt ears and I have no clue which sunscreen would be safe or if there is something else I could do? Would love to know from a DVM if there is a safe and inexpensive product to pick up? Our vet charges 70 bucks to be seen and my doxie had a major injury last year and ended up with alopecia etc and it has been advised to not bring him in now that his hair is growing back because of the stress he has at the clinic or I wouldn't be asking! Totally understand if y'all can't/won't make a suggestion!!

The surgeon told me he was anchoring my ovaries and fallopian tubes away from my uterus so while they were healing they wouldn't stick back together. There weren't any cuts or anything under my button. Just two super tiny holes that have already healed up. Hopefully that makes sense! But super coo that vets use them too!
